Goal setting is great! I am a huge proponent of having written goals, printed off so you can look at them every day. That said, if they are not specific, let’s be honest, they are just dreams.
Imagine you say to yourself, I would like to have a thousand clients. My first question to you would be, how many do you have right now? If you say 500, there is a chance that you could double your client base in a year. However, if you say 20 then you are probably dreaming. Few business owners have the infrastructure in place to go from an almost dead stop to a thousand clients. Your staffing, your accounting practices, your available financing options, etc.
Another thing I hear is that people want to make $10,000 a month online. That is a GREAT goal which will take you over a hundred thousand a year income. If you read guru blogs and follow all the peeps with “make money online” products, making 10 grand a month may seem like child’s play. Lots of them sell, “no website”, “no list”, “no problem”, just buy their product and you will be making gobs of money online. Unfortunately, the chances of making a consistent income online without growing relationships through social media, building sites, distributing content and other, how should I say it, work, is a pipe dream!
So What To Do About Goal Setting?
It is said that we overestimate what we can do in a year and underestimate what we can do in 5 years.
With that in mind, I ask my clients to make short term (year long) and long term (5 year) goals. Then we back that down to three month goals. The three month goals are practical items that can actually be accomplished in three months with some work. There are even times when we do one month goals (like blogging every day in December or making 8 videos in one month). These specific timelines and goals allow you to win!
Having specific goals is vital so that you can succeed. If you have a vague goal like making videos and make 1, was that enough or did you fail. Would two be the right number or did you have intentions to make 3 or 4? By putting an EXACT number you know that needs to be done and you can feel good when you accomplish what you set out to do!
So, for your goal setting, make sure to be specific with numbers and timelines! Now get out there and DO something!!!
